Un vespre sorgí en la seva ànima el desig d’esculpir una imatge d'El Plaer que roman per un instant. I sortí al món per buscar bronze. Perquè ell només podia esculpir en bronze.
Però tot el bronze del món havia desaparegut, i en cap part del món es podia trobar bronze, com no fos el bronze de la imatge d'El Dolor que perdura eternament.
Ara bé, aquesta imatge d’ell mateix, esculpida amb les seves pròpies mans, l’havia posat sobre la tomba de l’única persona que havia estimat en la vida. A la tomba de qui més havia estimat, situà aquesta imatge, que era la seva obra, perquè servís com a senyal de l’amor de l’home, que mai no mor, i el símbol del dolor de l’home, que roman per sempre. I en tot el món no hi havia més bronze, llevat del bronze d’aquesta imatge.
I prengué la imatge que havia esculpit i la introduí en un gran forn, lliurant-la al foc.
I del bronze de la imatge d'El Dolor que perdura eternament creà la imatge d'El Plaer que roman per un instant.

One evening there came into his soul the desire to fashion an image of The Pleasure that abideth for a Moment. And he went forth into the world to look for bronze. For he could only think in bronze.
But all the bronze of the whole world had disappeared, nor anywhere in the whole world was there any bronze to be found, save only the bronze of the image of The Sorrow that endureth for Ever.
Now this image he had himself, and with his own hands, fashioned, and had set it on the tomb of the one thing he had loved in life. On the tomb of the dead thing he had most loved had he set this image of his own fashioning, that it might serve as a sign of the love of man that dieth not, and a symbol of the sorrow of man that endureth for ever. And in the wole world there was no other bronze save the bronze of this image.
And he took the image he had fashioned, an set in a great furnace, and gave it to the fire.
